After the last couple of months where I have struggled to make it monthly. I decided that it was time to change things. I know things can be better because every finance tip you can find on the internet can help you, even if it is just a little bit with
That’s why I have put this list of tips together to not only help you save money, but also make money as well!
Now I am not an expert by far. I am just someone who when they see a problem they do what needs to be done to fix it. So I have scoured the internet to put together a list that can help the masses.
So with no further ado here is… A massive list of tips to help you save and make money!
First and foremost you can’t do anything with money if you don’t know how much is coming in and going out. That is why to start off this list we have:
1. CREATE A BUDGET!
Create a budget based on ALL your monthly income and expenses. You have to know where every penny is coming from as well as where they are going. I went a few months without doing this and had overdrafts galore! So get that budget together because it helps you stay on track!
Check out: How To Build A Budget
2. CHECK YOUR CREDIT SCORE!
So there are a ton of places to check your credit score. For a weekly update, you can check out nerdwallet.com but don’t fall into the trap of hoping to see a big change weekly. I looked at my score over the last two years and weekly it only moved up maybe 1 point a week. The best thing to do is just to check your credit reports from the three credit bureaus annually using annualcreditreport.com. You will want to do this annually to make sure nothing incorrect has snuck onto the reports.
3. TRACK YOUR NET WORTH!
Knowing what you are worth is imperative to figuring out your financial situation. You make think that you are barely scraping by when in actuality there is $10k of unpaid bills you have just been ignoring. You figured since that didn’t affect my day to day it didn’t matter. News flash it does! You will never truly be able to build wealth until you can pay off your debts and you can’t do that until you know what you’re worth. That way you can budget in your debts.
4. SET GOALS FINANCIALLY!
Since you just figured out you had some debt that should be your first goal. Pay off that debt! Goals give you a plan of attack and a sight to set for. After you pay off that debt then strive for the next best thing like a house, a trip or if you have kids then their college. Believe me, the act of setting financial goals will change your life!
5. HAVE MEETING TO REVIEW YOUR FINANCES
My wife and I do this every month. We get together to go over the finances. Each month you need to see if there are any changes that can be done to make sure what you are doing is still working. What you did three months ago isn’t going to work today because you know life changes. Now once my wife and I get better with the money we might reevaluate how we do things. I personally am always keeping track of the money because I want to know we don’t mess up between our monthly meetings. The point is to not to have one meeting and that’s it. you have to have a few meetings a year.
If while having these meetings you realize that you need to bring in more money well then now is the best time to talk to your spouse about it and maybe look for something new to bring in more money. Something,
6. DO SOMETHING THAT MAKES YOU HAPPY TO BRING IN MONEY!
If you don’t like your 9-5 job you currently have then consider finding another one. Never settle, I did that the entire time I was in California and I was never happy. Sometimes, this is easier said than done. I spent the first year in Colorado bouncing jobs because nobody was giving me what I wanted. Always try to level up though when you change that way you don’t have to start back at the bottom. What I mean by that is to leverage your experience to get a better job. Just don’t waste 10+ years in a job making minimum wage or next to that when you can find something better that makes you happy.
7. Or… START A BLOG!
So over my 20 years working I have had half a dozen or more jobs. None of them made me happy because I could never play the game and get the position that I wanted. I always wanted to be my own boss and figured that if I could be a Store Manager or Center Manager that at least would be close to that. Then I was always getting passed up for promotions so I decided that I would do something different. I decided that I would start my own blog and write about whatever I wanted to. Now, this is not a get rich quick idea it takes a lot of time and effort but it allows me to “be my own boss”. For now, I can do it on the side while I work my day job, but I fully intend to make blogging my full-time job.

8. SIDE HUSTLE!
Now back in July when things were tight I was planning on doing a side hustle like all those food delivery companies out there. I instead was able to pick up a TON of extra hours helping other stores at my regular job. So that basically acted as a side hustle because my paycheck doubled in the period that I did that. I got lucky because all these stores were offering overtime so I was getting 1.5x my normal pay to help them. Had that not been available for me though I would have definitely been delivering food to make some extra money!
9. DIVERSIFY YOUR INCOME!
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket! Diversify your income so you don’t rely on one source entirely. There are a few ways that you can do this. You could get a second job, put money in stocks, start a business and/or blog. Do you think most
Now the best way to invest is by investing in yourself. If you think I’m crazy I’m not. All of the retail jobs I have had I have always been passed up when it came for a promotion because the other person had a little more education. Now you can go the expensive route and go back to college or now there is a much more affordable way, like taking online courses. Don’t be stubborn and not take a class just for the heck of it because life will pass you by and then you will regret it.
11. WORK YOUR WORTH!
Make sure you’re getting paid what you’re worth. Today with the internet it makes it easy to search and find out what people make doing what you do in your area. Use this to your advantage because you will be able to find out if you are being underpaid or not. If you are being underpaid then do something about it! Never accept things how they are if you know you could be making more. Either ask for a
12. NEGOTIATE YOUR PAY!
This one comes with practice, as does everything. So I suggest that you start early in your career at this. Just think if you don’t learn how to negotiate well then when it comes time for that you are up for
13. SPEND MONEY TO GROW!
Now if you are a blogger this is definitely a must. There is so much to learn and the only way to get to the next level is to read books, take courses or take the big step and go to conferences. I know it may seem scary or risky and you don’t feel like it will be worth it but trust me it is. One thing that happens is you learn a lot of valuable information and the other thing is it pushes you to the next level. Those combined typically cause you to advance in what you are doing and are definitely worth the money you invested.
14. DON’T STAY WHERE YOU HATE IT!
For me, hindsight is 20/20. While we lived in California I stayed at a job I hated solely for the insurance.
15. SAVE AN EMERGENCY FUND!
You need to have an emergency fund! It needs to be in either a checking or savings account that you can access but just for emergencies. Now you ask: How much should I have? That depends on how much you make. The more you make then the less you need for the emergency fund. Though if things are the other way around then a good six months would be a safe start. The point is to make sure there is some money set aside for emergencies.
16. STAY OUT OF DEBT!
First, you need to get out of debt but once you do then you need to stay out! You need to do what you can to
17. NEVER COSIGN A LOAN!
If you are ever to cosign a loan you put yourself responsible. How you might ask? Well if the first party can’t pay then they will come to you to make sure payment is taken care of. So just
18. PAY YOURSELF BEFORE BILLS!
The only way to save money is to pay yourself first! So when you say each paycheck we need to save $150(I’m making that number up) You have to pay yourself first! Put that money aside like it never existed. Then go from there. If you don’t you will find a way to spend it. Trust me you will. I have had the same glasses for years because I haven’t done this.
19. GO BIG WITH SAVINGS!
You want to save at least 10% of your income. You can use this for your 401k too if you’d like as well. Most companies match up to a certain amount so if you don’t do at least that amount you are basically throwing away money they are giving you.
20. PLAN FOR BIG PURCHASES!
My financial goal from today forward is to never find myself in debt ever again. The only way to do that is to make sure I have the money to do things I want to do. So big purchases must be planned for. Save up for them and that way in my case I plan on trying to pay only “cash” for everything. I never want to be in debt again.
21. LIVE BELOW YOUR MEANS!
This one doesn’t matter if you are as wealthy as Jeff Bezo or completely broke you live below your means. I have had some struggles this year and had to put this one to the test a lot and it is hard. My hope though is that I will get to a place where I can find a budget where I am not constantly stressing about money all the time, because that is what I do right now. Yet you need to find a margin where you have enough money to be comfortable living yet not feel stressed day-to-day.
22. BE AWARE OF YOUR NEED FOR STUFF!
This is my wife. Now it isn’t stuff perse but books. She is addicted to getting books all the time. For me, it was Funko Pops. Everyone has something that they love to buy because companies try so hard to make you think you have to buy the newest item right when it comes out. If you can realize this and stop yourself then you can save a lot of money!
23. CUT YOUR EXPENSES!
Back when things got tight I needed to find some extra money so since I
24. RESEARCH ALL BIG PURCHASES!
You wouldn’t buy a house without doing your research so you should do the same with any big purchase.
25. WAIT 1O DAYS BEFORE MAKING BIG PURCHASES!
If you wait to buy anything that is $100 or more you will curb impulse spending. Also what I like to do when I am buying things is ask myself Do I want that or do I need that… If it falls into the want category I try to pass until it falls into the need. If you wait the 1o days and it is a need and you think it’s a good idea then go for it and get it.
26. WANT VS NEED!
Like I mentioned above, when you go to buy something think about what you’re buying and whether its something you want or need in your life. If it is just something you want then try passing for now and you will thank yourself later.
27. DON’T BUY FULL PRICE!
It blows my mind when people go to my work and don’t use the FREE yes free rewards program that saves them money. I try to use all store rewards programs and any apps I can to save myself money because I try my best to never pay full price for anything. I even use apps like Drop where I get points just for making my regular purchases at certain stores. It lets redeem those points for gift cards which saves me money. The point is don’t pay full price!
28. USE COUPONS!
If you join all those rewards programs they are bound to have apps where you can clip digital coupons (super easy) to save money! This might be a little time consuming but I just spend a little time each week after the stores drop their weekly ads and I clip all the coupons that week. That way I know I don’t miss any possible deals.
29. BUY IN BULK!
Costco, Sams Club… or other places you can buy in bulk are a great place to go if you have a family and need to save. Get the necessities like paper goods or canned items anything that wont go bad. Don’t buy it because its on sale if you already have a closet full though because then it’s going to waste.
So when things got a little rough a couple a months ago I started purging my home to eliminate the clutter as well as the stress. If you don’t use something for a while ask yourself do you need it? If not then donate it or sell it. If you can’t do that with it then throw it out! Eliminating the clutter will eliminate so much stress in your life you will be amazed!
31. QUALITY NOT QUANTITY!
Think of this like time with your kids. Who cares if you spend 24 hours with your kids if you are just sitting in the room with them doing nothing? If you just spend 2 quality hours a day with them then that is worth it. I say that because you may want to spend more on something of
32. SPEND MONEY ON EXPERIENCES
Would you rather spend money on a summer vacation or a bunch of stuff for the house? Personally, I vote the vacation because it is an experience that will last a lifetime, and if you have kids they will never forget.
33. NO SECRECTS WITH MONEY!
I have heard stories where family members have racked up large debts because they are too afraid to tell their spouse what they are doing. The problem is that it doesn’t matter if the accounts are joint or separate that does not change the fact that if you are sharing money with someone then you will suffer what happens if they bring in a ton a debt. So because of
34. TEACH YOUR KIDS ABOUT MONEY
If you have kids, this is so important! For some stupid
35. YOU’RE NOT A CELEBRITY…
I can’t keep track of who people think is amazing so I will leave it at this… you are not a celebrity. You are not the richest man in the world, who is currently Jeff Bezo. So stop comparing yourself to them. By doing this you are only going to make yourself feel like crap. Instead, look at where you were 3 years ago and look at where you have come. For me, 3 years ago I was in California under a mountain of debt unable to pay my rent. Now I am living in Colorado out from under that mountain and paying my rent. So see just in 3 years your life can progress a lot. So focus on yourself and no one else.
36. NO IS OK!
If you say yes to everything then you will be under a mountain of debt so fast. You have to learn to say no to things. By doing this you will actually save yourself time and money. Imagine that your friends ask you to go out(which you maybe didn’t want to do) and former you said yes and they went to a bar where you wasted your night and a ton of money. By you nicely telling them no you just saved that time to do something you wanted to do and a lot of money.
37. SPEND TIME WITH PEOPLE WHO KNOW MONEY!
Just like in business if you want to be successful you need to surround yourself with people who are successful. So if you do that with people who know money then that will rub off on you and you will start to make good money making decisions!
38. OWN IT!
Take ownership of the place you are in. Noone else got you there and
39. START GOOD MONEY HABITS!
If you want to be financially successful then you need to start good money habits. It takes over 2 months of doing something before it becomes routine, so making sure these habits are good enough is imperative since motivation will eventually wear off. The better the habits the more the likelihood of your success.
40. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT MONEY?
How do you feel about money? What is your attitude? Is it negative… meaning do you think you will always be broke? Or do you think positively and feel that your success is coming? Your thoughts will affect your success so if you think you will be broke, guess what… you probably will.
Bonus Tip: My post here is not rules they are more like guidelines. I didn’t like my financial situation so I did my own research. I highly suggest if this isn’t the right fit for you that you do the same. There is so much information out there that I am sure I missed something. Plus since it is your life not mine make sure you find what fits your life the best.
